"Convicted drunken drivers may soon be forced to buy special license plates that brand them as DUI offenders.

TALLAHASSEE - Some motorists convicted of DUI would be required to buy bright-colored license plates that identify them as drunken-driving offenders, under a bill that passed a key committee in the Legislature Wednesday. The bill, which passed the House Criminal Justice Committee on a 6-1 vote, would apply to convicted DUI offenders who get approval to continue driving because they have ''hardship'' exemptions, such as an inability to get to work otherwise. About 12,000 drivers convicted of DUI in Florida each year are issued the exemptions."

DUI Arrests in Largo
"Largo, Florida - If you live in Largo, your commute is much safer this morning than from last year at this time. It's courtesy of an aggressive patrol operation by the Largo Police Department. On Wednesday night the department released their crime statistics for 2005. It said that overall, crime is going down. . . . They also say there are fewer crashes. They attribute part of that to more DUI arrests which means those drivers are off the streets."

DUI Tampa - DUI Means Expulsion from U of Florida
Got DUI - Get Expelled: "UF looks beyond campus for DUI cases - They may try to hide it from Mom and Dad, but University of Florida students caught driving drunk in Alachua County won't be able to hide it from UF administrators. This month, UF began regularly monitoring off-campus DUI convictions. Students convicted of DUI in the county won't just face criminal courts, they'll go before UF's Office of Student Judicial Affairs, where they could face suspension or expulsion.
Student Judicial Affairs already hears between 30 and 40 on-campus DUI cases each year. But that number will likely go up now that UF is looking beyond its borders, said Eugene Zdziarski, UF's dean of students. First-time offenders in the system are typically suspended from school for a year, Zdziarski said. Repeat offenders, however, can face expulsion, he said."
